All Around You

Thank you to everyone who expressed their condolences about my friend Ellen, who is, by now, in the ground. She had to be buried quickly because she eschewed embalming, saying that she wanted to become worm food. She did worry very briefly about about allowing herself to decompose naturally because the chemotherapy had left her stuffed to the gills with toxic chemicals that she was afraid would harm other living creatures, but I think she got over that. There will be a memorial service for her next month.

Orchid

In lieu of flowers, here is a photo of an orchid in bloom, taken when I was house-sitting for Judi and Paul.

Judi has a good system for always having orchids in bloom. She buys them while they're blooming and when they stop blooming, she throws out the whole plant and buys another one.

Pure Narcissism

I'm about to place an order with Amazon that includes among other things a book by Harlan Ellison, a wooden comb, a book about a Chinese performance artist who lives in New York, a Smith's CD, and a small jar of Vegemite. I love Amazon. I mean, where else can you assemble such a collection of things like these, absolute necessities to a one, while still in your pajamas? Amazon is one-stop shopping for all your nutso needs.

LU-DAWG!

Dave and I had a very early dinner with Lu and Chris yesterday. During dinner Lu's phone rang and she looked at the caller ID and saw it was her mother and so she didn't pick up. (Now, me? I would never do something like that.) Anyway, a few hours after we parted ways, Lu called me and said, "I just got off the phone with my mom." Lu explained that her mom, who lives on the other side of the country, had heard about a recent spate of murder victims (that link will take you to an ABC News story)--most of them believed to be prostitutes or perhaps women involved in the drug trade--that have turned up at a construction site near the little city we call home. Mom was calling to make sure that Lu was not in any danger. I was, like, "Your mom just called to make sure that you weren't buried in a shallow grave out on the mesa? That's beautiful."

That's a caring mom right there.

Oh my gosh, I LOVE the Smith's!!!! I was really into them. And when they broke and he was just Morrisey, sorta wasn't into them after that! But the Smith's, I was really into them. Let me go grab my Ipod, be right back!

The Boy with the Thorn in his side

Girlfriend in a Coma

Panic...panic on the streets of London, panic on the streets of Birmingham....I wonder...blah blah blah :D

Ask....ask me, ask me, ask me!!!!! LOL. Love that song.

Hmm, am now wondering how I only have these few songs by them on here. And not more.

Hey...do you remember a song by Madness??? Our house.

Our House....in the middle of the street, our house....blah blah blah.

Or how about Human League....Obsession, fascination, and that one...where she was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar!!! Ha ha ha.

Okay going to jump in the shower. It's just your talk of the Smith's inspired me so much, I had to just blab to ya, sorry.

And I love Amazon too, I only order from them once a year or so though...I suck!!! Ha ha ha, just kidding. :D

Hahahaha! You can tell we're about the same age, Gina! I have all those--and then some. I even have a handful of Morissey songs because to me, his voice *is* The Smiths.

I was going to send you a mix CD with a bunch of '80's stuff on it with that book, but when I dropped my computer all my iTunes songs went with it. Gone! :( (It was my own fault because of course I had no backup. Grrr!!!)

I'm slooooowly building up my collection again, which is why I ordered the Smith's CD.

I love the Smith's-- Our House, is a huge fav of mine, are all us girls in the near or nearing same age bracket? Hm... I wonder..

Well I'm a Twirty-Somthing Gal... holding onto 34..

But my ultimate fav is "how soon is now" which is the jingle for "Charmed" love it..

My niece told me that thing about the smith's song being in "Charmed." I was, like, a whole new generation of young 'uns to take up the cause.

Ya, we all in the same age group. I'm thirty-seven. (I won't try to guess Gina's age, tho'!! ;)

I'm 36. Born 1972. :D

And oh yeah you are so right, his voice *IS* the Smith's to me too. I just didn't like his stuff when he went solo. Same for the Go go's, I LOVED the Go Go's but never really quite liked the stuff Belinda Carlisle did on her own...that whole, "heaven is a place on earth" stuff, just never really got me jamming like "we got the beat" did, lol, feeling quite dorky just saying that.

OMG, Love that "How Soon is Now" song too.

Since we're all around the same age I will say this. You know those shows "where are they now" type music shows? I was watching one on satelite a few month's back. You know Andrew Rigley (sp?) you know the other guy from Wham, with the doe eyes? Anyway he is married to one of the girls from Bananarama. I did NOT know that. I got all perked up almost like...what????? Ha ha ha. probably nothing the younger gen would be interested in, but wow, I remember both of them.

I LOVED this post!!!! So much fun stuff to talk about!!!

Oh, I just gotta ask, Rosa, did you ever watch the Smurf's back in the day? Smurfette and Brainy? LOL. And let's not even forget Papa smurf! LOL!

Rosa said...

Smurfs with a side of Strawberry Shortcake, anyone? Oh! Those are SOME memories! Ha!

That's so weird that WHAM! guy and Bananarama-chica are married. I always assumed that both the WHAM! guys were gay! Like the guys from Soft Cell...tainted love, touch me, baby, tainted love...I saw Soft Cell on Merv Griffin once...

Memory overload!!!! I thought I had drunk enough in the 90's to erase all my 80's memories. I guess not. I'll keep trying!

Looks like we are all mid twirty's ... Starwberry Shortcake, I used to have all their dolls so I could sniff their hair...

When I was really young, a tot, my favorite was Holly Hobbie!!! Remember her?

Rosa said...

I had Holly Hobby sheets on my bed! Of all those things, I miss Holly Hobby the most....

Gina said...

I used to have all strawbery shortcake dolls and her friends too. Blueberry muffin was my fave and lemon Merengue a distant 3rd! Ha ha ha.

And LOL, I thought both Wham guys were gay too. HOWEVER before we knew George Michael was, I had the biggets biggest crush on him! Seriously. I have an actual picture of my room (from back in the day) with a WHAM poster hanging on the wall. Now that I am older and I see the old "Wake me up before you go go" video and those tube socks and short shorts he was wearing, I wonder how could I have not known! Ha ha ha. I guess I was just a young thang, didn't know. Ha ha ha. :P

Rosa, did you ever do any toilet papering of houses, or do any Chinese fire drills? Where everyone runs out of the car runs around it at a red light? Or do...light as a feather stiff as a board!!! LOL, remember that? How about the M.A.S.H. game?

Gina said...

Ps, yeah Holly Hobby rocked!!! That is true! The kids now days, they just don't appreciate our cool stuff we used to have. Ha ha ha.:D

Rosa said...

I never did a Chinese fire drill, sadly, and I was too well-behaved a kid to ever TP anyone's house! (But I secretly loved to see it done!) I really missed out, no?

At least we did do the light as a feather thing--and also Bloody Mary--at sleep-overs...

Oh, man, I'm feeling way nostalgic now! Just don't start talking about the Little House on the Prarie books or I'll just break down crying!! My dream is to go visit the house where Laura and Almanzo used to live...

I had the whole Holly Hobbie bedding my mom bought for me when I was 3-4-5 can't remember but I loved the Colorforms too.. remember those, I loved Holly Hobbie, she bought a Wilton Cake pan and made me that cake for my b-day and surprised me with a Canopy bed with all Holly's bedding... man that was fantastic..

After that in middle school I had a thing for unicorns, and The Rainbow Show, rainbow pencils with Unicorns and the scratch and sniff stickers...

man I better stop..

Oh Rosa, so glad you brought up Little House, I used to have a little crush on their brother Albert. The actor who played him. Dark hair and so cute.

And was that Nellie Olson a witch or what? And her mom??? A nightmare!!! Ha ha ha. But their dad was so nice and their son Willie or whatever, lol.

Ma and Pa had the best values!!!

I still remember that theme to the show, lol! Oh man, those were the days.

I TP'ed once. My best friend in high school, the guy she was going out with, the love of her life at the time. Anyway he totally broke up with her, dogged her out and everything! And so a few of us girls went on a mission.... a toilet paper mission, we went and toilet papered his house. After that we all went to Denny's and had mozzarella cheese sticks and baskets of fries and drinks to celebrate. It made her feel a whole lot better. :P

Oh yeah, forgot about bloody Mary that was a scary one!!!

Girl Japan's Mom WINS the Golden Holly Hobby Award for Mom of the year. Man, oh, man! I'm totally jealous--though I did have a canopy bed, too, believe it or not. White with a pink frilly canopy.

Gina, you crack me up! TP and then Denny's, a fine high school tradition! Can you imagine if your boys TP'd a house in CHIBA?! Don't ever tell them about your wild TP days!

I forgot about LHOTP Albert--I wonder where that actor is now...I remember he had a funny kind of mouth, a little bit puckery like Renee Zellweger's...Wow. My brain is working overtime.

I *won't* bring up Facts of Life--which I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE--but I will say that recently I watched an episode online and I was, like, this is a *terrible* show!!

Gina said...

Albert had a lisp,ha ha ha. And he did have awfully red lips and a bit weird pucker you're right, lol. If I saw him now it could ruin my crush I used to have. I wanna google him yet at the same time I don't wanna.

Just to make you crazy this Sunday morning, I'll just end here and say....

"You take the good, you take the bad, you take them all and there you have the facts of life, the facts of life." Ha ha ha. Gosh probably not even the right words.

Loved facts of life, first show I was ever really hooked on. Jo, fancy shmancy snooty Blair. Mrs. Garret and Tootie. My mom and I used to watch this.

Did you ever watch the Electric Company? 12345....678910....11, 12!!!!

And hey how come you guys got canopy's? I never got one. My room was french tuille wallpaper, blue and white wall paper and all white furniture. Good grief!!! : ( It was nice....but I always wanted a canopy. My friend down the street had a canopy.

You guys are giving me serious canopy envy here.LOL, j/k. Have a good weekend over there my friend.
