New Jams

Here is a close-up of my new jams that I got from the sales rack at Kmart:

Seriously, I love the Kmart sales rack. There are always some crazy things on there, no? (Actually, the only time I ever go to a Kmart (or Walmart) is when I'm here in Deming. I'm just a Target shopper generally.)

Today I've only been to Kmart once and Walmart twice. The first Walmart trip yielded couscous, tomatoes, and the hot dogs that my mom requested for lunch. (Hebrew National represent! Those kosher dogs are tasty, yo.) The trip to Kmart was for butterfly closures--my mom had her staples out this morning and wanted to replace the steristrips that were put on after--but they didn't have any. The second Walmart trip was for butterfly closures and some candy (impulse purchase!).

Like I said, my mom had her staples out this morning. The doc is out of town, so one of his nurses removed them. I got to watch (even got a picture). The whole thing took ten minutes. Pretty simple actually.  After, we stopped at Sonic for a treat, giant icy drinks.

Giant icy drink--and candy!

While we were waiting for the nurse this morning, we ran into the woman who was in the hospital room next to my mom's and who had her hip replacement surgery just prior to my mother's. (The surgeon operated on her, had lunch, then operated on my mother.) This woman (I don't know her name) was up and walking the very next day and released a day earlier than my mother. Apparently she's healing very quickly. She's already started physical therapy, which my mother won't begin for another eleven days. (Though the delay is primarily due to a lack of open appointments at the PT facilities. Welcome to small town New Mexico.)

I'm writing the rest of this the next day, Saturday:

Last night my mother's friend Virina came for dinner. It was the perfect treat for both my mother and me as Virina is really funny and has wonderful stories to tell. We stayed up a little past our bedtimes, all of us I think, chatting and laughing. It was a really nice evening.

Dinner ended up being the braised short ribs, couscous, grilled zucchini, salad, and lime icebox pie. My personal favorite was the lime icebox pie which is a pancreas-crippling, tooth-dissolving pie made with sweetened condensed milk, heavy cream, fresh lime juice and lime zest. Mix all that together, layer it with some Ritz crakers (yes), and call it dessert. I had two pieces after dinner and another piece for breakfast this morning (welcome, diabetes) along with coffee and leftover couscous. (I made the mistake of making a whole box of couscous which means that basically we'll be eating leftover couscous for approximately one year and ten days.)

Since I'm down here in Deming, I'm missing the summer sale going on at the studio this weekend. Poor Dave had to step in since I was basically supposed to be responsible for setting up and managing the whole shebang. He's supposed to Skype me this morning so that I can have a tour of the set up sale and pick out a few things that I'd like for him to buy from our fellow artists.

Gonna sell me some muerte mugs!

Thank you, smart phones and Skype, because now we can video call each other from anywhere, so he can walk around and show me whatever. I've already gotten tours of our garden and I get to see the kitties at home, which is nice.
