Dead Pooling
We had an exciting Friday evening. After a quick Chinese dinner, Dave and I went to a movie. I can't think of the last time we went to a movie on a Friday night because as much as I hate crowds, I hate crowds in movie theaters even more. But actually, it wasn't too bad last night.
We went to see Deadpool which opened a few weeks ago (probably the reason it wasn't too terribly crowded). The people who were there were fairly well behaved. The only thing that went awry was that the idiot who was seated a few seats down the row insisted on talking during some of the quiet parts and singing along to some of the soundtrack. (Which. Who the fuck even does that?) Oh, and the other thing I thought was odd was that the seats in the theater are the kind that are wired up so that they shake whenever something onscreen warrants it (like, during a car crash or whatever). It's supposed to make things uber-exciting, but it just felt more like someone was kicking the back of my seat.
Anyway, the movie itself was very well constructed. I didn't find it laugh-out-loud funny--I have a very high bar for that kind of thing--but it had its clever moments. I did like a few of the characters (Weasel the bartender and the moody Negasonic Teenage Warhead were my favorites). I find Ryan Reynolds to be charmingly inoffensive, which is about as much as you can hope for in a big-name movie star anymore.
So there you go. That's as ringing an endorsement as I can give a superhero movie. Go and see it.
Something strange happened before the movie though. With all the recent warm weather, the plants have started to spew pollen and my allergies are going crazy. That's fine. I'm used to it. But what's different this year is that the normal stuffiness and congestion has started to sometimes be accompanied by a tightness in my upper chest and throat, a kind of asthma-y feeling that worries me since I've never had it before. It happened last night as we were kind of rushing to make the movie on time. When we finally sat down, it felt like I just couldn't catch my breath and my chest was being squeezed. I had some Benadryl with me so I took it right away and after about twenty minutes, the feeling lessened.
I'm supposed to see the doctor this coming Thursday and I'm going to ask if I need to start carrying an inhaler or try a new kind of medication. You used to be able to buy inhalers over the counter, but they were taken off the market supposedly over chlorofluorocarbon concerns or something. I don't know. Anyway, you can't find them over the counter anymore. Instead, I picked up some pseudoepinephrine medication that claims to help with asthma symptoms and some Benadryl melts, which are supposed to be fast acting. I haven't taken them--though I did go back on Allegra at a much decreased dose, which has helped--but I feel better having them around.
So that's my latest hypochondriac missive.
Today we got up bright and early--well, Dave did anyway; I got up at 11:00--and went to have lunch with my mom and brother. We went to Sweet Tomatoes and loaded up on vegetables. It was nice to sit and chat for awhile before heading off to run some errands.
We stopped by the studio for a bit, too, but only for a very short time. My clay is in terrible shape right now. Several weeks ago, I made the mistake of over-wetting part of a bag of clay, so that when I went to reach into it, it felt more like pudding than clay. I've been waiting for it to dry out, but it just hasn't. And worse, the other bag I have on hand has gotten too stiff to build with, so I had to wet it down. Argh! I could spread out the wet stuff on some bisque to suck some of the moisture out of it, but I didn't want to do that today since it takes some time to do that.
We came home via the grocery store and I picked up some stuff for dinner. (Dave was having dinner with his mother.)
That's been my exciting weekend so far.
