A Normal Saturday

Spent most of the day in bed.

I was up in the night, but got back to sleep and then slept until 10:30. About fifteen minutes after I woke up, Dave texted (he's up at Judi's to take care of Buzz and to cure him of this long-held idea that he wants a puppy) and asked if I still wanted to go to lunch. I said yes and he said he'd be down in about twenty minutes. I had time to brush my hair, wash my face, and get dressed. (I still haven't had a shower since Friday morning).

We went off, had lunch as a way to celebrate his last day on the job yesterday. We went to our favorite Japanese restaurant and shared a vegetable tempura appetizer. Then I had grilled eel and Dave had curry with tofu and grilled vegetables. We cleaned our plates and chatted about things we've seen on the internet recently.

We came home via the co-op, where we found out that they're no longer carrying the instant decaf coffee (organic, made in Germany, ridiculously expensive until you compare it to the cost of buying coffee at Starbucks, then it becomes a dirt cheap bargain) that is the cornerstone of my existence, practically. We ordered a case, which we still can do, thankfully.

After Dave dropped me off at home, he went back up to Judi's. I was sitting watching something on youtube when my upper lip started to swell up. That sounds strange, doesn't it? But about a couple of years ago, I started getting these allergic reactions to god knows what. It's calmed down a lot now, but when it first started happening, it was so frustrating and embarrassing because some days, completely at random, my eye would swell shut or my upper lip would swell up and it felt like someone had shoved marbles under my skin.

I went to the doctor who sent me to an allergist who did lots of tests and shrugged. Apparently it's just a thing that happens to some people--more women then men, more often in your 40s than not--where these random allergic reactions happen. They generally go away after a year to eighteen months, but sometimes (as in my case) they persist.

So when my face started to swell up, I took some benadryl and lay down for a six hour nap. (Hence the whole day in bed.) It was a bit scary because part of my mouth and nose also started to swell. (The dangerous thing about runaway allergic reactions is that the throat can swell up and then breathing becomes impossible, which is not a good place to end up. I'm always paranoid about that.)

When I woke up from my unplanned nap, I made some dinner--tuna and pasta salad. I had some and then lay back down because I was still dizzy.

Benadryl makes me feel awful anymore. (I used to have a bit of a Benadryl addiction--it is a central nervous system depressant, like alcohol--where I would take 5 or 6 at a time, several times a day. I remember once having an allergic reaction to a prescription medication and telling the doctor at urgent care (when she recommended that I take Benadryl) that I had taken six of them about an hour before, and she was, like, "How are you still standing up?" And I was, like, uh, I've built up a tolerance, I guess.)

So that was my day.
