It Makes Perfect Sense, Ne?

April and Aaron remark that Tokyo is just like a big Western city. They make this remark in a Watami, a kind of Japanese Appleby's. Just like an Appleby's in America--if your local Appleby's offered horse sashimi and fried lotus root chips.

Yes, Tokyo is just like a big Western city. There's a Gap in Ginza, and, just like in America, you have to take off your shoes to go into the dressing room to try anything on. There are Doritos and Pringles in the 7-11, just like there are in America. They sit alongside green tea chocolate and red

It makes sense that the fast-food joint downstairs offers, alongside the fries and burgers, takoyaki (balls of batter with bits of octopus in them). It makes perfect sense, ne?

It makes sense that the cases at 7-11 are filled not with chimichangas and burritos, but with kamaboko (fish sausage) on a stick, ne?

It makes sense that, instead of fifteen different kinds of diet soft drinks, the vending machines offer fifteen different kinds of green tea. That makes sense.

It makes sense that you can pay your utilities at the conbini, ne?
