The (F)utility Of Time

I took this photo on New Year's Day 2006, in Hiroshima, at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

This is a photo of a clock, destroyed on the morning we dropped the bomb on the city. It was one of many such items, each having been altered by the incredibly destructive force of the bomb. They're powerful symbols now in the dream that is this waking life.

I stood in front of that display for a long time, taking picture after picture, fascinated by these artifacts, as fascinated by the people who have held onto these things.

A Bit Of A Poem

I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.

I do not think that they will sing to me.

I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.
We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

T.S. Eliot, from The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock

For all you know, he could have been writing about mermaids.

Happy New Year!
