Long and Happy

Dave and I had dinner last night with Lu and her sweetheart Chris, who surprised us with the news they got married in Canada last month. (They got married in Canada because of course there is no such thing as same-sex marriage in the U.S.) They said that it was the Canadian Marriage Commissioner's first "homo wedding" and that she had said, "Usually I would pronounce you husband and wife, but what do you want me to say in this case? 'Life partners'?" On the same trip, they also attended Lu's twentieth high school reunion (her graduating class was about sixty people, twenty-five of whom showed up, a handful of whom wore "Homo Posse" t-shirts in honor of Lu and Chris's "lifestyle choice"), and to top it all off they spent three days visiting Lu's mother so that she could meet her new daughter-in-law.

Talk about a whirlwind homo tour.

Just completely by chance (since I didn't know that they had gotten married), I showed up with a gift for them, a pair of tea towels that I had embroidered with little piggies. I actually made them well before Christmas (!), but I just hung onto them, forgetting time and again to bring them with me whenever I met with Lu. So it was fortuitous that last night I actually remembered to take them with me when we met for dinner.

The choice of the pig design was also fortuitous, I think. I chose the piggies for Lu for a couple of reasons. One reason is because years ago just after she started dating my friend Leah (now the ex), Lu told me a dream she had about pigs. Later, Leah told me that Lu had kept a couple of piglets as pets when she was a kid--she grew up on a ranch--and that the piglets' favorite thing to do was to rock in a rocking chair by themselves. Seriously. Lu would put them in a rocking chair and one would stand up and rock the chair back and forth while the other would lie down enjoying the ride. Then when the rocking piggy got tired, she would lie down while the other piglet rocked the chair. How cute and strange is that?

Though I guess in many ways it is the perfect description of a happy married life.

So, congratulations, Lu and Chris. I hope you have a long, happy life together!
