Kindle-Mas!
Look what my mom and stepdad sent me for Christmas!
Yep--
It's a Kindle!
It came downloaded with a manual for its own use (meta!) and a dictionary already installed. After registering it with Amazon and reading most of the manual (which I did while the battery charged), I downloaded two books. I bought The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood (I just finished Oryx and Crake) and The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. (I just looked up the Sebold novel and turns out its been made into a movie. Blech.) Anyway, I meant to start reading the Atwood, but somehow managed to get into the Sebold first.
So how is it reading on a Kindle? Actually, it's not bad at all. The page is a little small and the buttons a little clicky, if you know what I mean, and if you're a corner page turner, well, you're gonna break that habit pee-dee-que. But once you're into the story, there is no problem at all. It's just reading. One of the things I really like about it is that I can adjust the font size on the screen so that I can easily read without my glasses. I know that sounds like a crazy thing, but I really like to read without my glasses at night sometimes (because it's hard to lay on your side with glasses on).
Let's see, what else? Hmmm...missing from the experience is the sense of moving through a book as evidenced by the thickness of the pages as they move from right to left. Does that make sense? I mean, I'm used to judging how much of a book I've read from how thick each "side" of the open book is. That's gone. Though there is a little progress bar at the bottom of the screen, it's not the same. Still, that isn't as much of a drawback when one considers that one can carry over a thousand novels at one time with a single Kindle.
So there's that.
All in all, so far I really love it. It's a pretty cool little device!
