I seem to remember that when I was a kid, you had to smash your piggy bank to get your money out of it. There didn't used to be little corks and rubber stoppers to let you access your cash whenever you wanted it. Right? Well, the idea of busting up a bank must be pretty old school because I have been making banks at the studio recently, and most people (no matter their age) claim that they've never heard of banks that you have to smash open. Ridiculous, no? Who raised these people?
Anyway, here are a few of the banks I've made, still in the green stage.
I'm still not sure how they're going to be glazed. Right now I'm just having fun making them.
That's the smallest of the them. It's about the size of a large soup cup.
I threw these as closed forms--which takes a little bit of practice--then I added the eyes and appendages. These little toothy guys are kinda cute, no?
This is the assembled group, though I threw another nine today that will need to be finished.
And, yes, these are old school banks, the smashable ones.

ah i recall the oldschool piggy banks. My mother has a mexican piggy bank thats absolutely beautiful... would never imagine smashing it... same applies to these you've made.. i couldn't smash those little faces looking up at me lol your work is awesome.

Fantastic banks! I really like the toothy alien pod creatures and the way the arms/tentacles become eyes. So playful and fun.
I could never smash such a bank - and I did have the unopening kind of piggy banks as a kid. I used to sneak my money out by sliding a knife in the slot and coaxing coins out.
I remember & still have some of those banks. Ireally like one-eyed, toothy bank. Or, maybe the 4-armed one that can't seem to make upp its mind:-) Love you, Mom
