Ten Me
Crunch's owners came back into town last night and so I got to sleep in my own bed for the first time in weeks. I woke this morning to this little nerd crawling all over me, trying to find a comfortable spot to snuggle.
She tangled with our other cat Gray Kitty at some point while I was away, and now she's got a nose full of scratches. At this rate, we're going to have to change her name to Scarface.
This past weekend seemed to go by really quickly. We got to spend some time at the studio on Sunday though, which was nice. Dave raku'd and threw some cactus pots and ocarina bodies and I loaded a bisque kiln, decorated a couple of vases, and built a new olla to put in the garden.
Today I am home, puttering about and wondering how everything gets so messy. I filled the hummingbird feeder and it immediately drew the attention of two of our little resident hummers. I put up our new shower curtain. I watched part of The African Queen on Netflix. I watered the garden and wondered about spraying for black widows again, as there are two new black widow webs near where we sprayed last time. I let the kitties in and out of the casita a dozen times.
My life is so boring right now. I wanted to write more, so I cast about online for writing prompts. The only one that caught my attention was based on David Brin's book Kiln People, in which people are able to make 10 clay copies per day of themselves that they can then send off to do their bidding. When the copies come home at the end of the day, the person has the option of "downloading" the copy's memories. The prompt asks, what would my ten copies be doing today?
Copy #1 would be doing all the menial housekeeping chores I should be doing and am not. It would be cleaning out the fridge, doing the dishes, sweeping and mopping the floors and so on. I would not download these memories.
Copy #2 would be out in the garden, digging out the crap soil we have and replacing it with some decent soil. After that job was finished, it would have to spray for black widows. I would not download these memories, except under extraordinary circumstances.
Copy #3 would be doing some kind of volunteer or charity work, teaching kids to read or feeding the homeless. I might download these memories.
Copy #4 would be sitting in a classroom, listening to a lecture, or in a library, doing homework or research. I would download these memories.
Copy #5 through Copy #9 would be out working various jobs to bring home paychecks that would enable me, the original, to travel. I would not download these memories.
Copy #10 would be my twin, a kind of companion--which sounds pathetic, no? But honestly, I do like myself and as annoying as I am, I still like spending time with myself, so with a copy of me I could take myself to the movies or other things that I don't like doing alone but that other people that I know don't necessarily want to do. I think it would be interesting to download these memories, possibly as a part of therapy.
And what would I be doing (besides running around with Copy #10)? I'd probably be reading more, as I've only got one and a bit of books under my belt so far this month. I finished David Sedaris's new book Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls and I'm into a re-read of Tama Janowitz's totally 80's book of short stories Slaves of New York.
Actually come to think of it, maybe Copy #10 could be set to reading all the things I think I should read but can't quite bring myself to read, like Moby Dick or the works of Charles Dickens. I would download those memories--for bragging purposes only.
