Get It Together

This always makes me laugh:

The "Hispanic Foods" aisle at the Walmarts.

I just don't understand it. I mean, what other race or ethnicity would you do this to and find it acceptable? The "African-American Foods" aisle? Can you imagine? Yikes. But I guess you have to put the Paula Deen products somewhere.

And what are "Hispanic Foods" anyway? Being roughly of the Hispanic persuasion, I am usually pretty offended by the foods Walmart has to offer me. I mean, the other day I went looking in their freezer section for soy-based ice cream and could find none. They also don't have the kind of decaffeinated organic instant coffee that I, Hispanic that I am, drink.  And don't get me started on their lack of coconut creamer that I, Hispanic, like to add to that coffee.

"Hispanic Foods" indeed.

Although the day I took this picture, I helped a trio of young girls retrieve an enormous bottle of hot sauce from a top shelf in the "Hispanic Foods" section. As I watched, the biggest girl hoisted the smallest girl up to grab a bottle and, after a somewhat heated disagreement during which the larger girl became increasingly red-faced and out of breath while trying to make her point and keep aloft the smaller girl, the smaller girl purposefully grabbed the wrong bottle anyway. That's when I offered my help.

So yes, there is a market for "Hispanic Foods," I'll give you that--though I don't understand why you can't just put the "Hispanic" hot sauce next to the Tabasco sauce in the white people foods part of the store. We'll adapt, Walmart.

What else is going on?

My mom has a blog now: tiredofworkingwoman.blogspot.com  So you can go and read that if you want.

Right?! Walmart has a corner on the market here in this little town, sadly. "Hispanic Foods"?! At least they don't just label it "Ethnic" and call it a day.
