One Of Those Days

What went on today?

Well, our old car went into the mechanics this morning at 7:30 a.m. We took it in because I've been noticing that the brakes squeak, so I wanted to have those checked out. (Turns out there's nothing wrong with the brakes.) And we also wanted them to look at the air conditioning in the car, which we haven't used for, like 12 years, since it went on the fritz and we just never had it looked at. Turns out it's a simple fix, one wire. And for that we've gone without air conditioning in the desert for 12 years. (Grrr.) There's also something hinky about the engine mount, so that's going to be fixed. We'll get it back tomorrow, hopefully.

When I got home, I started reading a new book that Dave picked up for me, J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy. It's not bad, but she really needed to have an editor strip about one-hundred and fifty pages off of it and get her to reign in, even a bit, her tendency to let things get loose and unwieldy. For example, ten chapters in she's still introducing new characters. There's about eighteen or twenty characters in it so far--if not more. I mean, I can recall eighteen characters off the top of my head and I'm sure I'm leaving one or two off the list. So there's that.

In the afternoon, I got a nap, then got up and did some chores.  I took a shower and then took one of my meds. About twenty minutes later, my face turned red and my neck got itchy. I was having an allergic reaction to something, probably the medication. I've long suspected that I'm allergic to this medication for a couple of reasons. One is that I've been vaguely red-faced since I started taking it, a period of many, many months. The other, more important reason is that I'm allergic to sulfa medications and this is one of those. I talked to my doctor about it and he told me that it's known to be tolerated by people with sulfa allergies, which is why I kept taking it, but recently he told me to double my dose (I was taking a half dose before, which was working okay but not great), so I did. And I think that's what caused me problems. I've got another medication to try in it's place, but it was a bit scary today to have such a strong reaction.

I took some benadryl and then had to text Dave because I had the car and was supposed to go pick him up. I told him that the benadryl wouldn't take effect for a bit, so I was going to come and pick him up way early so that I wasn't driving around later in heavy traffic in a benadryl haze.

By the time I picked him up, the benadryl was kicking in and I felt better if not a little loopy. He took over driving and we went to pick up some Chinese food for dinner (an order of the spicy broccoli that I love so much and an order of tofu and vegetables for a bit of protein).

We came home and fed all the little creatures in our care and then sat down to have our dinner. By the time we finished dinner, the benadryl was in full effect, so I lay down and slept for a few hours.

I got up and did another walking workout. And that leads us to now. Of course I got so much sleep during that day that I'm wide awake now. Maybe I'll settle in and watch something on Netflix.
