The Weekend Catch Up
On Saturday, Dave, my brother and I went to vote and then to lunch and then, on the way home, I was in a car accident. It was not serious, but it was a hit and run. I ended up calling the police and reporting it, but it was a 2-plus hour wait for an officer, so I called back and told them I wasn't going to wait.
Of course, it irritated my shoulder and neck and I spent the next thirty six hours or so taking ibuprofen (and dealing with it knocking me out) and icing my shoulder. Dave went out and, on Kelly and Kevin's advice, got me some CBD ointment and I used that, too, which, I don't know if it helped, but it certainly didn't hurt.
So that was my Saturday, basically. At least I'll have something to talk about in therapy on Tuesday.
I was up for part of Saturday night so of course I got online. Kamau Bell, one of my favorite comedians, was exhorting his Twitter followers to donate to various teachers via a website where teachers can post what they need for their classrooms or various programs they run. In about 45 minutes, he had funded a classroom library, gotten enough money to buy graphing calculators for an all-girl STEM-focused middle school, and, when I signed on, was looking for donors for a K-2 teacher who only wanted basic school supplies--pencils!!!!--for her classroom. I had had a shitty afternoon, so I threw her some money so that hopefully the good karma could take the bad away with it.
On Sunday, I slept in. When I got up, Dave and I made avocado pasta for lunch using chickpea pasta and lots of grated Pecorino cheese. Then I had a nap while Dave went out for groceries. When I got up, Dave was gone, having gone off to help his mother out with some cell phone and internet stuff. I had as shower and then I made a hamburger and baked potato for dinner.
I read a bit more of The Sisters Brothers. I can take it in small increments. It is a ridiculously depressing book in many ways, but very well written. Kind of reminds me of The Stranger, which I read when I was probably 19 years old. (Was I ever 19 years old? It seems like a world of time ago.) I also read the opening of Beloved by Toni Morrison, which I'd never read before despite everyone raving over it. It is beyond amazing, like, stunningly gorgeous, so I put it on my list of books to read. (I didn't want to give Amazon $10 to Kindle a copy when I know that used copies can be had for a song--though it will require me going to an actual used bookstore, which, do those even exist anymore?) Then I started re-reading Shirley Jackson: A Rather Haunted Life, which was already on my shelf. It's a not very good biography, but I wanted more non-horror Shirley Jackson-related stuff after I finished Life Among the Savages and Raising Demons. I have books of her short stories of course (not the novels, because I am not strong enough for those), so I may start on those next. I'm so happy that The Brain is into reading again!
Today is Monday. It's about 4:00 in the morning. (I've been up all night, of course.) I skipped studying on Saturday and Sunday, so I'll have to make up that time today and tomorrow. I also skipped my PT exercises, just so that I could see how things were going to shake out regarding my neck and shoulder, but they seem better, so I'm going to try to start back--slowly--with the exercises. I have PT on Thursday which I will go to if I'm still feeling alright.

How awful about the car accident you were in. I hope you recover quickly.
I can't believe how underfunded classrooms are. My BFF is a teacher and I know that she's spent oodles of her own money buying stuff for her school, so it isn't just the US.
Your avocado pasta sounds delicious. I could go for some chickpea pasta...don't know if it is available here...certainly not in my neck of the woods.
I don't like depressing books so I probably wouldn't read The Sisters Brothers. I read a little Shirley Jackson when I was younger, but not all that much. These days I just have a hard time finding time to read.
Hi Helen!
Luckily it was a very minor accident, so I am back to my usual activities, just a little more carefully until everything is 100% again.
I think I stole the original avocado pasta idea from your blog--lol! I use the chickpea stuff because it doesn't mess with my blood sugar as much as the (delicious) white pasta.
It is hard to find time to read! I'm enjoying reading something that isn't school-related and isn't online. How has reading become a guilty pleasure?!
