Eventful

Yesterday was an eventful day, kind of.

Dave got a haircut! Well, actually, I cut Dave's hair. He's had probably two haircuts (both by me) in the last eighteen months. (I've had one, also done myself.) He was starting to look pretty shaggy, so we broke out the clippers and scissors and I cut his hair at the studio (there are concrete floors there so it's easy to sweep up). I think it looks pretty good!

Just before we did that, we stopped off at the clay store and I got two bags of clay, about a dozen new underglazes, and half a dozen brushes. Dave got two bags of clay. We spent about $200, which--gulp. Clay has gotten more expensive as have underglazes. But I have to remind myself that we haven't spent anything on clay or pottery in almost two years. I've been working on old things, getting a piece I made almost two years ago (!) underglazed and fired. I've also painted a handful of bisque wear plates. And that's it.

So, yes, now I have two new bags of SB-red, the iron-rich clay that I love to work with. And I immediately cleaned off my workspace and started a new sculpture. I haven't started anything new in a long, long time! I didn't get very far; I just rolled out the base and added three coils, but still. My hands (especially my right thumb) were very sore from using the scissors to cut Dave's hair and I didn't want to push it because the last time I did that, it took months, almost four months to get back to the point where it wasn't painful to do almost anything. So today I'm resting them.

I should say that our lack of studio time hasn't been all pandemic-related. For a long time, I couldn't work on building (especially on tall things) because of my neck. But physical therapy has made that so much better and I can now work without triggering jaw and neck pain. That is a great change.

I wasn't the only one who started something new. In the last couple of weeks, Dave has made half a dozen new mugs and yesterday he threw bowls. (We'll use them as Christmas presents if we can get them fired and glazed in time.

So, yes, an eventful day!
