I Myself Am A Work In Progress

WIP

I've been throwing! (Something that I never do.) Here the products of that thing that I never do. On the top shelf is stuff that I threw last Sunday. It's green still, hasn't been through the first firing. On the bottom shelf is bisque wear, some of it waxed.

I was telling David tonight that I have a lot of trouble recognizing my own thrown things when they've come through the final glaze firing. Why? They seem kind of generic and unfamiliar both.  See, this is what the products of my final firings often look like:

I'm not quite sure how to feel about the things that I'm throwing. They seem so disconnected from me, whereas the things I handbuild seem so rooted in me. Maybe I haven't given myself enough time and practice to find my own throwing style. I guess it's taken me almost a decade to find a handbuilding style, so maybe it'll take that long to find my own throwing style.

Anyway, I've learned a lot from watching youtube videos of people throwing. This man in particular, Dan Unsworth of Ingleton pottery in Ingleton, North Yorkshire (if that is even a real place, I don't know), has some interesting throwing techniques. Have a look at this three-minute candlestick holder throwing tutorial. (Even if you never plan on throwing a candlestick holder in your life, at least his accent will fascinate you):
