MUUUUUUUGS!!

The last of the mugs from the 100 Mug Challenge came out of the kiln today:



The four at the very far left are Dave's behemoth mugs. The other twelve are mine. Here are some close-ups:


That mug is glazed in shino over black.

Shino is a type of glaze that originated in Japan but which has been adapted to American materials and techniques. One of the appealing characteristics of the glaze is that it "breaks" over texture, highlighting features of the cup. Here, it breaks dark over the stamped impressions in the cup. (At the rim is another glaze, saturated iron, under the shino.)



There are speckled shinos, but this is not one of those. The speckles are actually in the clay, and they're showing through the glaze.

I carved that tentacle into the mug just because.
