This Thing and This Thing and This Thing

So this happened.

That, my friends, is a subconjunctival hemorrhage, a broken blood vessel in my eye. Could be the result of almost anything at all apparently, a cough or a sneeze or just whatever.

 Looks good, doesn't it?

I took that picture with my cell phone on Monday night before class, standing in the bathroom in the continuing ed building. At the time, unless I pulled my eyelid away, you could only see the blood at the rim of my eye. Now it's migrated toward my iris, where it's formed a partial ring, blood red, on the left side of my eye.  Apparently these things are mostly harmless and go away in 10-14 days. Still, it looks really gross and makes me self-conscious enough that I skipped class on Tuesday night.

What else has been going on?

Well, tonight is my first exam in the probability and statistics class. I'm having a hard time getting worked up about it. I haven't even finished my homework that's due tonight nor have I worked through the practice exam. This is not the kind of student I am normally, let me tell you. In my previous student incarnation, I was pretty much type A, carried a 4.0 through my senior year of college and am a Phi Beta Kappa member. Now, I feel more like I'm interested in the material, but not interested in acing the tests. So we'll see how that works out, I guess.

Here is another ocarina:

It's a cuttlefish-ish looking thing. The hole on the side is one of the finger holes. The mouthpiece is around the back, and you have to turn the thing on its head to play it.  It turned out to be somewhat oddly menacing, but that's fine. I don't necessarily mind that.

HI Rosa,
I'm a friend of Laura's. I like the cuttlefish! I do have a strong bias toward cephalopods, tho. We went to the aquarium at the Dc zoo recently and saw Pandora, a giant Pacific octopus. She was bright orangey red and so silk-like. I think our arms like our
hands makes us a little uncomfortable.

Hi Shannon! Any friend of Laura's is a friend of mine! ;)

I've got an unreasonable response to octopuses in aquariums. I feel so sorry for them! Too sorry to look at them. But I feel that way about most creatures in cages or tanks, you know? I read somewhere once that octopuses are so intelligent that if they had longer lifespans, they'd be the dominant life form on earth (rather than humans). I'm inclined to believe it.
