The Persistence of Memory

New work, started Thursday night (and meant to be finished the same night, but it got away from me).

I started with the idea of a cell, a model of a cell, with various organelles and inclusions.

A closer view of the inside, in progress:

This is the prototype, proto-cell, in progress:

Most people who have seen it think it's an oceanic, coral-y thing. I don't correct them.

The words on the front are lifted from Salvador Dali's famous painting The Persistence of Memory (though I misremembered it as being the title of a book by John Varley which is called The Persistence of Vision).

And Etc.

I've been thinking about this kind of work for a while. This is a kind of maquette for a larger piece. I'm thinking of this in a room-sized version. But I'll have to build up to that. For now this little one is perplexing enough.
