Sunday Visitor

I could not sleep last night. I finally dozed off around 6:30 in the morning and slept until about 10:30. I definitely need to start being more diligent about my sleep habits.

After I woke up, Dave and I made a quick breakfast (egg sannies with cheese, tomato, onions and green chile). Dave had a clarinet lesson at 2:00 and I wanted to go to the studio while he was at his lesson, so we both took showers and got dressed.

We stopped at Starbucks on the way to the studio for a couple of iced lattes. I used to be an iced coffee fiend, but today I realized that I actually prefer hot coffee, even when it's blazing hot outside.

At the studio, I spent a little time making a miniature figure that inadvertently turned into a sort of leprechaun. I did not get a picture of it, but I did get a picture of a little visitor to our studio:

Dave caught this harmless little house centipede in one of the empty yogurt containers we use for rinse water and such. His pictures of it came out much better than mine because he thought to do this:

Despite looking like something out of a nightmare, they are completely benign (they can bite and it apparently stings, but they normally avoid people if at all possible) and they are actually beneficial since they feed on pests like roaches, flies, bed bugs and so on. I just read online that they can live for up to a decade!

Anyway, this one got relocated to the alleyway behind the house where I hope it goes on to live a long and happy life!

After entertaining our little visitor, we headed off to a very late lunch/early dinner at the lesser Japanese restaurant.

It's still very tasty, but almost fast-foodish. We both had vegetable donburi and we shared an order of omurice, all made with brown rice.

On the way home, we hit up Whole Foods, mainly for fruits and vegetables. The cherries are starting to come into season, so we got a couple of kinds of those. We also picked up some plums, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. We go through a lot of berries around here.

I know they are harmless, but those and silverfish give me the willies!

Lol! They don't call them creepy-crawlies for nothing! They are pretty freaky, but even for the freaky ones, we tend to do catch and release. The only things I don't do that for are roaches (UGH!) and mosquitoes (which I'm allergic to).

You're a better person than me!
Oh no, allergic to mosquitoes? What do you use as a repellant? I was just outside, planting an astilbe before the rains came (again) and I got bit twice on my face. I am not allergic, and mosquitoes are part of the season, but I hate being bitten on the face, butt and toes.

Ugh! Face bites are the worst!! I got bit on the face by a mosquito a day before Dave and I got married. One whole side of my face swelled up so big that the skin was tight, and my eye on that side was swollen completely shut. I had to take a huge dose of steroids to bring down the swelling--otherwise the wedding pics would have looked like Dave was marrying the Elephant Man. LOL!

Luckily, mosquitoes are not a huge problem in the desert. We get a few when people leave standing water around in old tires and such, or from the irrigation ditches before they bomb them with insecticide each year, but I'll tell you, I go 100% DEET when I need to. That stuff will stop anything in its tracks!
