All Hallow's Eve

Well there's another Halloween put to bed! We got two trick-or-treaters this year, two boys in masks who came up to the patio gate and yelled, "Trick or treat!" I had been kicking back, reading and posting on one of the snarky celebrity gossip websites I love, but I got up and went out, trying to open the bags of candy we had bought (one of suckers, one of Starbursts, neither of which I'll eat). They each got a big handful of suckers because that was the easier bag to open.

And that was it, our sum total of trick-or-treaters for the year.

But backing up a bit to earlier in the afternoon: After the plumber left and we could use our bathroom again, I took a shower and got dressed and then we spent Saturday afternoon running errands. (Seems like we suddenly have so many errands to run. Why?)

We went by Target again, then to the pet store, then we had to do a big shop at the Co-op. I don't know how a single cart of groceries can translate into over $200, but that's where we ended up. We came home and put everything away.

For dinner I made something I've never made before in my life: Cheesy grits.

We had picked up a package of quick-cooking grits on our last trip to Target because Dave wanted to try them out. I've eaten grits before, of course, in restaurants in the south (and in places that may as well be the south, like Pennsyltucky), but I've never made them at home. Still I guess grits are just low-rent polenta, right? And I have cooked polenta at home.

Anyway, I cooked them in the microwave and added a huge chunk of sharp cheddar, chopped into little bits. The whole thing seemed like it was not going to come together until it did. In the end, they were not bad, though they needed more salt than I could bring myself to put in and I should have made them with at least some milk instead of all water.

I had a bowl of grits with some of the rotisserie chicken I bought at the co-op. Dave had Quorn nuggests. We both had some steamed broccoli on the side. And just like that, we're back to cooking at home. Kind of.

Hello Rosa!

We stopped handing out candy on Halloween years ago as we live on a one of the few 'main' streets in this little town. I think the last time we did do Halloween, we had five trick or treaters. Though the students across the street were whopping it up until after midnight, so R called the cops on them. Bah humbug!

That dinner sounds absolutely delicious - and something similar I have been craving for awhile (chicken, broccoli and mac n cheese).

Your crave meal is Dave's favorite meal of all times, just about. (Minus the chicken for him, though!) He requests it for his birthday every year! LOL!

I miss handing out candy since we get so few trick-or-treaters. One of my friends lives in a ritzier nabe and she hands out bags and bags of candy every year. Next year I think I'll invite myself over to her place to help out with the candy duties.

I find as I get older that I am less likely to put up with noisy shenanigans. I'd've called the cops, too!

I've never had grits, and polenta only once. I made it and since I'd never had it, had no idea what to expect. I didn't like it!

There were no trick or treaters here of course! Some of the foreign mothers do arrange with neighbours to do trick or treating, but since I'm not one, I don't!
