Working Girl

Tuesday

Today is a quiet day. I'm at the stage in my monthly cycle when I'm not sleeping well, so I got a few scattered hours in the night and a few scattered hours in the morning.

While I'm not sleeping, I've been reading. I finished Shrill, the Lindy West, which I ended up liking more than I thought I would. (I skipped the part where she writes extensively about her father's death from lung cancer (this I gathered before flipping past the chapter) though. I don't need or want to read about that stuff right now.) After finishing that, I cruised around the Kindle online store looking for some cheap reads. They have a 99 romance novels for 99 cents each thing going on, so I read the description of a few of the novels on offer. I've never been a romance novel reader (blech) but for $1.05 (with tax) I figured I could see what they've got to offer. Most of them looked really garbage-y, but I managed to find one that I'm actually enjoying. It's called Easily Amused by a woman named Karen McQuestion (really?). It's told from the point of view of an anti-social, introverted, somewhat cynical woman on the cusp of turning 30. It reads like a fairly well-written young adult novel aimed at adults, which is not a bad thing. (I just looked her up. Turns out most of her books are for teen readers and most of them are $1.99 each, so I think I'll be reading more from her.)

Anyway, my plans for this afternoon are to sew up a hanging bedside holder with pockets for my kindle and eyeglasses (and maybe some other detritus that I keep near the bed). My shoulder is not happy right now (and I've got a headache, which is an unusual thing for me to have) though, so I'm not sure how far I'll get with this plan.

Wednesday

So I have a job. I just got a call this morning with an official offer, which I accepted. I have orientation on July 22, computer training the next day, then I join the unit I'll be working on and will train there for several weeks before I start working on my own. I'll be working part time (my choice, since I wasn't sure how this job was going to go, but I'll transition to full time if I like the work--and transfer as soon as I am eligible to do so if I don't like the work). Good news, right?

I won't be able to write much about the work, given the potential for HIPAA violations, so I imagine that my blog comments about it will be few and far between.

I have a list of things to do before I start: a drug screen and a health screen, immunization records to collect, etc., etc. Some of those things will have to wait until next week since it's a holiday week and many people are taking Friday off to make a long weekend out of the 4th of July holiday. I scheduled my health screen (a basic physical exam) for mid-next week and now I need to make an appointment for the other stuff and call my doctor's office if I can't find my shot records....and I need to buy scrubs and shoes and...So much stuff to do. Why do I suddenly need a nap? (Maybe because I'm not sleeping well?)

In other news:

I did get around to sewing a hanging bedside holder yesterday, but since I couldn't decide the best way to hang it, it's just pinned to the wall with pushpins. I thought about adding a dowel and hanging it that way, but...what I'd really like is a way to hang it from the back, like a picture wire. (I guess I could do that if I reinforced the back so that the weight of the items wouldn't cause the fabric to pull downward from the wire attachment points. Hm. Maybe a cardboard insert? I'll see if I can improve the design with a second version.

I finished Easily Amused and kindled two more novels by the same author, Good Man, Dalton and Half A Heart. I started Good Man, Dalton last night. I like it. It's not got a lot of literary style, but it's an interesting, plainly-told story, which is about all I can handle right now, fiction-wise. Reading up on the author, I found out that she's from Wisconsin and her novels read like a mid-westerner wrote them. (Wisconsin is not Missouri, after all.) Take that however you do.

We're having a quiet 4th of July. Dave and I are going to Judi's to help her clean the pump in her koi pond. That should be exciting. After, maybe we'll go to lunch or stick around and work in the studio. We'll see.

Thanks Helen! Im rejoining the working world with some trepidation--lol!--but it should be interesting.

I'm enjoying the holiday so far by staying indoors and reading novels. My idea of a good time.

Have a fabulous weekend!
